Located just off of I-395 and in Arlington County is the small neighborhood of Shirlington. This neighborhood is convenient to the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport and downtown D.C.  While not metro accessible, Shirlington is home to the only enclosed bus station in all of Arlington.  Residents know that there is little reason to ever leave their neighborhood  They have everything they need within a short walk, compliments of the newly-expanded Village at Shirlington.

Dog owners fall in love with this pet-friendly neighborhood and the Shirlington Dog Park where dogs can run free through wooded areas and splash in the Four Mile Run stream.  The wide sidewalks that lead neighborhood residents to the Village at Shirlington are bustling with joggers, cyclists and stroller-pushing parents.  As a matter of fact, a few years ago you could find the owners of Avenue Realty pushing a stroller to the village for a morning coffee and muffin from Best Buns.

At Busboys & Poets you will find customers working on their laptops at the bar-height community work stations, relaxing on the couch with a new book and a warm drink, or enjoying a meal at a dining table.  The menu offers many delicious vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options.

Carlyle is the most popular brunch destination on a Sunday in Shirlington.   I have yet to find a better meal than their fruit-covered French toast with a cool mimosa and a warm coffee.  It is the perfect complement to the fresh air outdoor seating that is offered in the warm months.  If you don’t have time to dine-in, Best Buns Bread Company is the bakery for the Carlyle and offers sandwiches, bakery items and coffees to-go.  Delicious would be an understatement.

If you enjoy Lebanese/American cuisine, Aladdin’s Eatery will not disappoint.  Priding themselves in distinctive homemade pita bread, they also offer a full vegetarian and vegan menu.  Cooking with fresh vegetables and meat contains no or few preservatives, freshly squeezing fruits for their juices, and offering twelve varieties of natural herb teas makes this neighborhood restaurant a popular choice.

One of the newer restaurants in Village at Shirlington is Samuel Beckett’s Irish Gastro Pub which prides itself on offering a real Irish experience.  Cleverly decorated with artifacts and paintings from Ireland, this establishment offers its customers the look and taste of Ireland.  Foods range from old Ireland classics and new Irish dishes carefully prepared with local Arlington ingredients whenever possible.  This pub is also a music lover’s destination with live music offered several times a week.


There are plenty of places to shop at the Village in Shirlington.  Everyday needs are met with Harris Teeter, a post office, BB&T, dry cleaners and several salons.  But the collection of boutique stores are not to be missed.

Periwinkle offers a variety of quality clothing from emerging designers to well-established favorites.  The staff at this boutique is very welcoming and the store offers everything you need for a complete outfit from accessories to necessities.

For those looking for the perfect gift or new home décor item, le village Marche is sure to deliver.  This French inspired shop as won a “Best of Washington” award.  If it is beautiful furniture you are looking for, Hardwood Artisans craftsmanship is sure to win you over.

Things To Do

There is plenty to do within the Shirlington neighborhood.  Events are listed on the Village at Shirlington website, including Shirlie’s Girls Night Out, Movie under the Stars, Christmas Tree Lighting and Oktoberfest.

Signature Theatre is a Tony-Award winning professional theater company located in the heart of Shirlington.  Whether you enjoy contemporary or classic productions, musicals or plays, there is a show you will enjoy at this fantastic new theatre.  Live theatre isn’t for everyone.  For those who prefer the big screen, AMC Loews is just a block away.

The Shirlington Branch Library is one of the newest libraries, built in 2007.  Today it offers residents many educational series, book reading and children’s story time.

Outdoor enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with the 2012 improvements to the Four Mile Run Trail in Shirlington (which is actually seven miles long, not four, and connects to the W&OD Trail).  Residents of this neighborhood and those passing through enjoy a newly-paved path with exercise equipment installed by ArlingtonCounty along the pathway.

The Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center keeps neighborhood residents exercising regardless of age.  The facilities for adults include a multipurpose gymnasium, fitness room, wellness studio, gymnastics area and boxing gym.
